During our attempts to capture this, we found out the best settings on our cameras for good results were:
What shutter speed did you use for all the pictures? 1/800
What mode on the camera did you use? manuel exposure
Was your camera set to single shot or continuous shot? Continuous
What ISO was used? 200
How did you time the bursting balloons so perfectly? Did the person popping it count? What about you? The person with the balloon would count to 3 and popped it
